In this paper we searched the historical roots of some contemporary attacks against humanistic disciplines such as Philosophy, Rhetoric, History and Poetic. We have found them in three texts of Early Modernity: The Advancing of learning, the Novum Organum, both written by Francis Bacon, and the Discourse on Method by Descartes. We discussed the arguments developed by these authors against Humanities, especially against Scholastic Philosophy and the scholastic method of disputation. Finally we deal with the defence of humanistic education written by Vico in his The method of studies of our time.
