Black subjectivities and westernized academic thought: Experiences of an Afro-Cuban professor at a Brazilian university

Study programs in Social Sciences and Humanities at many Latin American universities have not yet resolved an important question: promote more voices of black subjects in history, sociology, philosophy and anthropology courses. As long as epistemological bases remain rooted in Eurocentric knowledge, it will make difficult the struggle to subvert this logic. Didactic challenges like Theories of History, Historiography or Scientific Methodology are examples of a Westernized academic thought supporting in and through epistemic codes diffused since white power space named North. It is very important to have several locus of enunciation of black subjectivities in academic thought produced in the African diaspora of America, because we have the human right to know our historical truth. Thinking about reframing the teaching of history, we suggest other ways of reading and interpreting Theories of History and Historiography with contributions from African and afrodescendant authors.
