Abstract

This article deals with a singular female figure in the history of Mesopotamia who exercised, at the same time, the functions of princess, priestess, and poet. Enheduanna was the most prominent priestess during the reign of her father, the powerful King Sargon of Akkad. She is known for her literary compositions and several objects containing cuneiform inscriptions, including an alabaster disk, now held at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Reflecting on the female condition in antiquity and, in particular, on the exercise of poetry and the affirmation of individual authorship in Mesopotamian literary production are some of the issues that we bring up in this contribution.
