Since her writings on the totalitarian event, Hannah Arendt has conducted exercises of thought that are openly guided by the affective record of the experiences and events she sought to understand. In the prologue of The Human Condition, a work in which the author proposes, from a philosophical anthropology, to analyze historically the phenomenon of the alienation of the world, the affective elements that guided her exercise of thought are clearly indicated: fear and hope. In this article, we will see how this affective register guides Arendt's proposal and what decisive role this aspect plays in the activity of understanding.
